This is only marginally useful for 1999 to 2004. It is not applicable to 1996 to 1998 as returned in search.

For 1999 to 2004, open the hood, and using a 7mm socket remove the long headlamp jackscrew, located as shown in the photo above, 2nd from left. Grasp the headlight assembly on the upper inboard and lower outboard corners and wiggle and pull very firmly outward to disengage the 3 ball stud alignment posts from their sockets (be cautious of the sharp edges of the grille and fender areas surrounding the headlamp).

Replacement of Jeep Cherokee Headlight

There is a bulb that plugs into a socket dirctly behind the headlight. In order to access it you must lift the hood. Next, you will have to remove the plastic ring that holds the socket in the rear of the headlight housing. Twist the ring CCW (if you are facing the front of the vehicle)until it becomes loose and pull the socket and bulb through the hole. Then using a small flat tipped screwdriver lift out the little tab that holds the lightbulb on the socket and pull the bulb straight out from the socket. {Note: Pay Close Attention to the direction the plastic ring came out from, it is a pain to get back on if you don't. It will only go on one way...to hold the socket in place}

The headlamp assembly just snaps on and off. There are four attachments (one in each corner). Give the assembly a firm pull out, and it should pop on out. Additional Info: If your lens assembly is like mine then you'll need to pop the hood and remove the anchor screws - one on the top of the lens near the fender and the other is below the headlight lens near the center of the lens assembly. After the two screws are removed it simply pulls out.

If your talking about just the headlights, then you can just pull them off. They should pop off the 2 mount studs. Then to get the new ones on just hold them in place of the mounting studs and hit them with your palm to pop them back on. Be sure before pulling them off, that you remove the lamp, power plug and lamp lock.

If your talking about all 6 lenses there are about 10 screws that need to be removed for the corner and running lenses, also you will need to remove the grill. All in all, it really is quite easy. The job of replacing all 6 lenses with new took me about an hour.

Also, do yourself a favor before installing the new lenses. Run a bead of silicone around the seam of the lenses, so no water will be able to get in. Why Jeep didn't do this OEM, who knows.

The headlight lense is one piece. The cover is not removeable. To remove the lense, remove the two screws on the top and pull the headlight forward.

How do you remove the headlight assembly in order to replace a headlight bulb on a Pontiac Grand Am SE?

It depends completely on what year it is. If it is a composite style headlight (newer years), then the bulb should remove from the back of the assembly, while the assembly is left in the car. If it is an older year model, then the assembly is held in with two screws that can be reached from the front of the head light.
