Turn the shirt inside out, place a damp cloth over where the letters are and iron it. the heat from the other side loosens the glue. Use a butter knife to scrape off the letters. You'll have some glue residue left over. Not much you can do about that. Good luck!
I found using a spray bottle worked well. It takes a few times to get everything off. This was the best response for this problem.
