Wash them first in 2 cups of white vinegar only. No detergent. Follow by washing them in 2 cups of baking soda. Again, no detergent. Use Hot cycle both times. Allow to soak an hour or so in each if possible. After both washes, wash with detergent as normal. Make sure they get fully dry in the dryer. This is especially important with denim and towels. Hope this helps!
This is a recipe I used when my children were small two decades ago. It never caused any harm to their clothes at any time, even colors. this is inexplicable but I would check for colorfastness first. Dissolve 1 c cascade dishwasher detergent and 1/4 c bleach in one gallon hot water. with cotton you can put in while it's still hot. Polyester should be cooled some first. soak 1/2 hour or more. I found myself just dissolving some cascade with a splash of bleach worked fine too since the bleach made me a little nervous with colored clothes.
