Open all the windows and use some fans to expel the fumes. Higher temperatures with low humidity will help the floor cure faster and lesson the smell impact in the house. This is what I know for oil base polyurethane. Oil base seems to have a strings smell then the water base.

If it is a light layer of film you may be able to get it off with just applying heat from a blow dryer on the affected area. However, if this fails, a heat gun (essentially a much stronger blow dryer used for all sorts of construction work, etc) will do the trick. HOWEVER, be sure to be careful with the heat gun. On some types of material it may cause it to catch fire, or melt the area. If you make sure to hold it at the right distance and move it quickly across the white area you should be able to take the stain off without damaging the item.
