Add a raw potato to the food and cook some more.

You can also add a sugar to counteract the salt, the raw potato works best in soups, but don't forget to take it out before serving.

Salt from food can be removed by adding more base ingredients, fresh lemon juice, sugar or honey, tomato or plain yoghurt.

Add a raw potato to dishes with liquid as they're cooking. Remember to take the potato out before serving.

The only way I have found to reduce saltiness in dry dishes is to add more of whatever the dish is made of.

Some people say that adding sugar will counteract salt, but I have never tried it, so can't say.

Should salt be added to the cooking water?

That depends what you are cooking and whether or not you are trying to reduce your salt intake. Adding salt to the cooking water will increase the boiling temperature just a tiny bit and it will add to the flavor of the food. It will distribute the flavor benefits of the salt more evenly than sprinkling the salt on food after it is cooked.
