If you have scratches on a wooden table, the easiest way to remove them is to finely sand the area with a soft grade sandpaper, such as 100 grit or higher. Once you've lightly sanded, you can polish the area with a rubbing compound or special oil made for wood surfaces. If the scratches are deep, you may consider filling them with a matching wood putty before sanding, so that the marks are removed and the surface is smooth after sanding and polishing.

there are other postings out there that have advised trying one of these options:

1. ash and oil or 2. ash and lemon juice or 3. veg oil and salt let set on mark or 4. mayo and ash or just mayo set on for a little bit or 5. a steam iron trick or 6. baking soda and toothpaste (not gel, I'm assuming conventional kind) 7. another option included the name of some different oils, turpentine... 8. one place suggested a product available from the hardware stores that fixes finishes.

they all talk about knowing the type of wood, finish and whether the heat has penetrated the varnish or the wood itself. generally some of these have to set on a bit and then be wiped in the direction of the grain. I'm gonna try a few of these out today. good luck.
