Removing the alternator is not too difficult providing you know roughly what you are doing. The alternator on a 1993 L reg diesel is located on the front left hand side approx halfway up the engine. It is easiest if you remove the battery to allow easier access to some of the fixings. It is also necessary to remove the fan assembly and loosen off the mounting bolts on the radiators so that the rads can be shifted forward as one of the main support bolts for the alternator (a 5" to 6" long bolt) has to be removed by taking into the space between the radiators and the alternator (a space approx 2" wide). This info was not in the fiddlers manual. Access then is fairly easy if you have the requisite number of arms and the flexibility of an octopus. Refitting is the reverse of the above and I would use a fiddlers manual to supplement this tip. It took me 3 to 4 hours fiddling - there might of course be another way but this worked for me. Good luck.
