i'm asking the question
I just changed the ashtray light in my 2000 Windstar LX. It is probably similar. Open the ashtray. Take a regular screwdriver and insert it between the top of the ashtray and the dash board in the center of the ashtray. There is a latch hidden there. Lift the screwdriver handle, which will press down on the latch. Then simply pull out the ashtray. It will be connected by the wires for the light. You can either disconnect the wires or carefully turn over the ashtray. When you turn it over you will see the light assembly attached to the wires. It snaps out of the ashtray. Then you can remove the light from the assembly by releasing the latches of both sides of the assembly. Then the light pulls straight out. Putting it back together is a little tricky. Once you have the new light installed and the light assembly put back together you need to reinstall the light assembly. This is a bit of trouble. Perhaps putting a piece of scotch tape around the assembly will help to get it aligned. It snaps back into place. Reconnect the wires if necessary and reinsert the ashtray.
Remove ashtray by lifting up & out. You will see 2 Phillips head screws. Take them out. Remove ashtray bracket assembly. You will see 2 clips on the bottom of radio on both sides press both tabs down & pull out radio.
Disconnect the negative bat. terminal. Remove the instrument cluster. Remove the hood release cable. Remove the retaining screws and detatch the left and right lower dash panels. Remove the glove compartment and ashtray. Remove the heater control assembly. Remove the center console. Remove the steering column U bracket and lower the column and support it. Remove the defroster grille and the defroster ducts at each end of the instrument panel. Remove the upper and lower panel bolts at each end. Remove the panel frame from the floor bolts in the center. Remove the mounting bolts that attatch the instrument panel to the cowl at the base of the windshield. Pull the instrument panel back and disconnect all electrical fittings. Remove it from the door opening.
To remove the dash locate the 7mm hex screws that hold the lower edge of the dash to the car. Remove all visible screws. Pull out the ashtray and remove four more 7mm Hex screws and then unplug the little light assembly. Remove the ashtray drawer. Put the parking brake on, turn the key to on, and move the shift lever down to L1. Remove the two 7mm hex screws that hold the black instrument cover on, these are located at the top of the instrument cluster. After this has been removed, see another hex screw on the left wall inside the instrument cluster. Remove it as well. The rest of the dash snaps out but you must pull straight towards yourself and do not rock or twist the dash panel . It will snap out. It is very easy to break the little plastic nibs that hold the dash panel on.
To remove the ashtray, life up gently and pull out at the same time. Some ashtrays have a button that can be pushed for removal.
just pull the ashtray all the way out and remove the screws on the sides.
Can this actually happen? I think I lost a very special ring the same way...
To get to the ashtray bulb on a 1997 Z71, the console top needs to be removed. First remove the ashtray from its holder. Then, remove the clips on the sides holding the console top on.
