The battery is located under the hood; just beyong the firewall on the passenger side. The plastic battery cover has two raised handles that should allow you to slide the cover toward the driver side of the vehicle. You will only have to slide it about one inch and it should release.
The rear door handle, on a 2012 Volkswagen Passat, can be removed by first removing the decorative cover. Remove the retaining screws and the linkage.

You can get a fuse box diagram for a 98 Volkswagen Passat at your local auto parts store. You can also look on the cover of the fuse box to see a list of what each fuse run.
The hall sensor can be found on top of a Volkswagen Passat engine. The sensor is placed under the valve cover next to the timing belt.

How to remove battery cover to replace battery
I assume you mean the large battery used to start the car. Lift hood, remove the firewall neoprene seal on the top edge sealing the hood to the engine compartment, then carefull remove the clips on the plastic cover that is on top of the battery, it runs the full width of the engine compartment. Using a 13mm socket remove the hold down clamp on the left (passenger) side of the battery. remove the negative cable then the positive cable (negative first to prevent shorts) stow them out of the way. Note the plus side orientation. Using a battery lift strap remove the battery from it's battery tray. Installation is the reverse of this process.
