Look at the front of the machine beside the activity LEDs. You'll see a panel. Turn the machine over and unscrew the panel, theres only one screw holding it on. Now, it takes some working to actually get this cover off, but it will come off eventualy. Inside there you'll find the harddrive, its just a simple matter of unscrewing it and pulling the cradle out.Refitting is the reverse of removal.

Is this a trick question? This model of Toshiba has onboard memory, so I guess remove the motherboard...

remove battery, remove the small screw in upper left-hand corner. Remove the screw at the recessed center hole. Remove CD-ROM, remove the screw in top right-hand corner. Lift palm rest upwards and lay it back on the keyboard. The memory module is in front of you to the left of where the plastic cable is plugged into.

I looked for the user guide, but there is a problem on the TOshiba homepage (as usual...). My guess is this: turn around you notebook on the back. On the left side (there are also the audio chinch plugins!) you will see a latch that sourrounds also the audio ports. It is fixed by 1 - 3 screws, try the loosen these screws. then you might be abel to pull out the hard drive to the side (it might be behind the plastic latch). BE CAREFULLY! THE CONNECTORS FROM NOTEBOOK-HDDs ARE VERY THIN!! Good luck.

Toshiba does not specify a maximum size hard drive for this laptop. Based on its age / date of manufacture, it was probably built around the time of the 2.1 GB barrier, and thus is already equipped with the largest possible drive usable under most operating systems.

Can a Toshiba 460CDt boot from the CD?

Any computer can boot from CD, you must get into BIOS[read your manual on how, I hope]. Once your there you set the boot order so that CD is on top or first instead of floppy or hard-drive. Its safe to leave it that way too, there are many freeware downloadable CDs on the net from helping you repair a system to running Linux directly from the CD drive, no-install.
