I just replaced the starter on my 95 Nissan Pathfinder but the 1994 looks to be the same. It was quite a job. The starter is right under the oil filter. The biggest problem I had was seeing what I was doing and then being able to get around in the space to do anything. A mirror helped a bit to see what I was doing but I could reach and do anything and still see thru the mirror. This what I would suggest. The first thing you want to do is disconnect the battery so you don't get burned. Next, give yourself some room to work. Remove the guard plate then remove the oil filter and the exhaust manifold heat shield as well as the front passenger side tire and the rubber splash guard from the fender. From the side you should now be able to see inside a little bit from where the tire was. Disconnect the oil pressure indicator which is to the left of the oil filter. I used a long flat edge screw driver and stuck it in to disengage the clip which holds it on. You should be able to get at the nut from up top to remove the one cable off the starter now. The bottom nut is just connected to the starter itself. There should only be the one connector left. If you can get at it push down on it about an inch or so from the end and pull. You have to disengage the clip on it or it won't come off. If it give you problems, you might get away with leaving it on until you have the starter loose. But do remove the cable from it's fasteners to give it slack. Once you have everything disconnected you can take off the starter. You get at the bolt from behind the flywheel; not from the starter side. What I did was position the new starter like the old one is sitting to get an idea of where the bolts would be. They are by the exhaust so you may need to look a bit for them. You will probably need a extension to get at these. I just left the bolts in the holes. When the bolts are removed the starter should drop, or at least loosen. The starter will need to slide out toward the front of the motor. In my case, a steel rod from the steering was partially blocking the way. You need to drop this rod down about an inch. What I found was that all you need to down is take the one nut off the steering on the passenger side which is connected to the frame and pound it down until the starter clears. It is a little hard to explain but it is closest to the bumper and is not the tie rods. You should now be able to remove the starter. Remember how you got the starter out because you will need to put the new one in the exact same way the old one came out. Before you do this clean up all the old oil and crud from the area and make sure not to get any in the flywheel area. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.

On the 95 Nissan Pathfinder, there is a heatshield attached to the outside case of the starter. This heatshield is held on by three small phillips/slotted screws (either head works) and must be removed. The starter and the heatshield together as a unit is simply too large to remove through the available area forward of the starter. Other than this, this explanation is quite good on a pretty difficult job. October 2007.

This is not an easy project!!! The above description is very good though. getting at the bolts, especially the top one was the hardest for me. My heatshield on the exhaust was quite rusted and the screws that hold it together broke trying to take them off. the screws that hold the heatshield to the starter are difficult to get at but must be removed to get the starter out.

93 Pathfinder SE - This description of this job is impressive by the original poster and others. I followed it and it works. The only thing I want to emphasize is that "THE REAL TRICK" is lowering that crossovver steering bar. The one bolt is different on the passenger side than the other (in a 93). It is the most forward bolt attaching a link from the frame to the inner steering. As he said, remove it and just tap it down. This will give you the clearance to get the starter out. I didn't even unattach any connectors (or that stupid heat shield) except the oil pressure sensor plug. This is a tough job though and be prepared to get dirty.

95 Pathy SE 4x4 - I agree with the latter. The trick is getting the bar down. After you remove your passenger front tire turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. It gives better clearance for the tie rod assembly to slide down the front mounting tube.

Just as the original poster stated...Passenger side closest to the bumper. I didn't even have to take it all the way off...just tap it down after you pull the nut and washer off. Tie rod joint will be snug against your frame. I only removed the oil pressure plug. After wiggling the starter out the front I set it on 2 cinder blocks so no tension was on the harness. Pulled connectors, shield and put it on my new one...Took me about 45 minutes. James Mac http://www.odessacomputerrepair.com

You do not have to remove anything except for the starter mounting bolts on the 94 Pathfinder. My 22-year-old son was able to fish the starter out above the steering rod. There would be no reason to remove the engine mounts or the steering rod to replace the starter. I've seen this done and firsthand by my son. It's a greasy job and its tight but if you have the right tools it can easily be done. It took him about 45 minutes. The first step is to remove the oil filter. We jacked the car up from the passenger side, and supported it with Jack stands, just behind the passenger wheelwith the tire removed. Apparently this provides enough clearance for the starter to be removed above the rod. It's a bit of a frame twister but do the job quickly and get the jack down as soon as possible.
