The best way to remove varnish of of wood such as tables or chairs by yourself is to sand it off. Either use sandpaper (and do it by hand) or use an automatic sander. The automatic sander is less tiring, but it is a lot of work. Otherwise you could hire a company to do it for you. The above answer only applies to flat wood surfaces; you can't effectively sand in contours and small corners without destroying the physical shape of the piece. A gel stripper, used with all precautions, is the best method. A heat gun will be effective on some varnishes; scrape or brush the softened finish off as soon as it is workable.

∙ 13y agoThere is a product available called "Howard Restor-A-Finish" It's available in 16 oz. cans. It it available in a few different colors, choose the one closest to your original surface. Follow up with a coat of paste wax.
I've used it with great success with 0000 steel wool to remove white rings and found it quite successful. Be careful, restor-a-finish can be addictive. I keep grabbing pieces of furniture and going over them because they look a lot better afterward and it's not that difficult.
