1. The memory stick may have an actual physical switch to enable and disable write protection. Mine slid forward and back, very much like on a 3 1/2" floppy disk.

2. If your flash drive works fine at home and not at work it is likely your IT people have set security policies to prevent their use. This is to prevent people from copying company files and taking them somewhere.

3. If your flash drive is prepared ("formatted") to run in Windows and you put it in an Apple it will appear to be read-only, and vice versa. There is only one way to prepare a drive to be used on both systems simultaneously: it is called FAT (specifically FAT32.) Be aware FAT32 is old and you may run into its limitations.

You can remove the write protection from a micro SD card by flipping the unlock switch at the side of the card, if it has one. Alternatively, go to Start, Run and type cmd in the box. Type Diskpart, then type List Volume. Type Select Volume and the letter that represents the drive. Type Attributes Disk Clear Read-only to remove the write protection.

SD cards have a switch on the left side (with electrical contacts side down) that controls write protection. When the switch is moved in the direction of the contacts on the underside of the card write protection is disabled. If the switch is moved in the opposite direction write protection is enabled.

There are two methods to removing write protection.

First:

  • If your card has a lock tab on one of the side then move it to the other end of the sliding positions.

Second:If you do not have a lock tab the follow these

  • Click start
  • Click Run
  • Type "CMD"
  • Hit Enter - A black screen should now appear
  • Type "diskpart"
  • Wait until you get "DISKPART>" then type in "select volume (blank)" fill in the blank with the letter of the drive you are trying to remove write protection from
  • Now type "attributes volume clear readonly"

You have now removed write protection

Micro SD cards do not typically have physical "write protection." That is reserved for the full-sized cards which have a switch along the side.

If the file system on the SD card is write protected, you would remove that write protection with a computer in the same way you would de-protect any file system. It usually requires root or administrator access.
