I remove the two (2) hex head bolts that hold the caliper assembly onto the brake shield assembly. The entire caliper assembly comes off the rotor and you then can remove the inner and outer pads and replace them with new ones
Pop out the old pads and put the new ones in ( but remember to push in the brake piston carefully an slowly, making sure that the master cylinder cap is loosened enough to let back pressure out from compressing the piston. I use a large C-Clamp to push in the piston. You may want to use a small piece of wood between the piston head and the head of the C-Clamp, that protects the piston from scratch/gouge damage
Removing the backs should be about the same except the pistons have to be pushed in by turning them clockwise by inserting a special piston compression tool (Ford Part # T87P-2588-A) and turning the piston slowly clockwise. Some use a pair of Needle Nose pliers but be careful as the sharp ends of the pliers can damage the rubber piston shroud
1995 Mercury Cougar does not have front wheel brake shoes. It has disc brakes and therefore disc brake pads. Copy & paste this link into your browser. http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/youcan/html/ccr/ccr20021101db.html
The easiest way is with a "C" clamp.
