How do you replace a Rear License Plate Light Bulb on a 2001 Suzuki XL-7 without breaking the light cover?

You need to take off the large rectangular plastic fascia on the inside part of the tail - it's not bolted, it just uses the plastic grommets so you can use a screwdriver to pry enough out to work it by hand.
Once you have the cover off, take out the 2 large screws on the right hand side. These hold the license plate mount in. Once the screws are out, you can use a rubber mallet or by hand (it requires not only force but finesse - I broke the right grommet).
Take the mallet, or your hand(s), and apply force to the top of the license plate mount (the thing that holds the entire bulb assembly and what the license plate cover itself screws into).
By applying force you make the grommet pop out of the brackets, and can then take the entire assembly off the tail. Just make sure you have a table or something to put the whole thing on as there is a wire going through the tail to the bulb unit. I was trying to troubleshoot where there is a 10AMP wire in the tail and it lead to me taking the whole license plate and light bulb cover off.
