How do you replace a headlight bulb on a 2001 GMC Sonoma?

No tools required. Raise the hood. On the backside of the core support there will be two plastic strips behind each headlamp assembly. Pull upward on the strips for the affected assembly. When they disengage, pull slightly upward and outward on the assembly. Unplug wiring as desired and replace bulbs or the entire assembly. Headlight bulbs are 9005 and 9006's. To reinstall engage the lower tabs of the assembly in the slots in the core support, then push the two prongs through the square hole. Reinstall the strips and close the hood.

To get to the Malibu's headlamp assembly, first pull up on the two black plastic tabs to remove the headlights plastic cover.
After the headlight area cover is removed, there are two tabs that when you pull up on them they will release the headlight assembly.

Open the hood, behind the lights there are 2 flat plastic straps. Pull up on straps, that will allow you to pull the headligt out and replace bulbs

On the front of the vehicle there should be a ring around the headlight there should be 4 bolts around the outer part of the ring remove the bolts and the headlight will pull out. (make sure to unplug hesdlight before you remove it).

Hope this helps...if its the same lamp assembly as my 2004, which I think it is, it has a 1/4 turn to the left cover that opens to the bulb socket wires and bulb. need to unplug the socket assembly , gently rocking and pull gently backwards, (It is a very tight fit to get your hand in, but can be done), there is a wire retainer need to depress this wire to let it open, shows in my manual as the bend in the wire over the bulb base, it sorta unsnaps... then the bulb is free to remove, goes back in in reverse, but since it a Halogen bulb, try not to touch it with bare hands, the oils in your skin, make them burn out in about 2 months use... One more thing, When installlin the new bulb, in addtion to not touching the glass portion, make sure the small metal tab on the bulb faces up, makes it easier to reattach the holding retainer - I removed the Coolant reservior to for easier access (Its only two 10mm bolts) There is a full description of changing a bulb on a 2004 Sedona in another wiki answer. Open the hood.

The highlight assembly has a nut holding it in place so remove that.

The pull the assembly straight up.

The bulbs can be remove by turning them and pulling out

Open hood and you will see two L shaped pins on the top back of headlight assembly.
swing them forward and pull up to remove. the headlight capsule will pull straight out frontward. Don't touch new bulb glass with fingers, the oil will make them burn out.

Usually there is a a female sleeve that slides over the halogen bulb on the back of the headlight, you just twist counter clockwise and the bulb and sleeve come off of the headlight assembly. It could be different, depending on the type of headlight housing you have. The way i was talking about is with the STK Assembly. NOTE: Be sure not to touch the glass on the new bulb, it messes up the coating.

in the engine compartment in the front above the lights you will see two black tabs. you have to pull them up and then the light pods can be pulled out from the front. then just twist out the light socket and pull out the bulb. you should replace both at the same time
