On any battery disconnect the terminal connected to the frame (usually negative) first. Then you won't do low temperature welding if your wrench hits some metal. When you re-connect the battery attach the frame grounded terminal last.
Be aware, substitutes are not always direct, easy replacements. Check out the exact terminal configuration of the original vs. the replacement. For example, a Harley brand battery has the terminal flush with the side of the battery. A replacement YUASA, YTX20L-BS (used on Polaris), has the terminals inset from the side.
