I own a 91 corolla dx and i replaced my struts a few months ago. It's not really very complicated but it does take some know how and a few specialized tools. the tools i used were:

assorted crescent wrenches

air compressor

impact wrench

assorted sockets for impact wrench

strut compressor (example: http://www.etoolcart.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=240)

this is only needed if the struts you are putting on require you to install the spring.

if not, then you dont need to worry about that. I needed it to change the spring

brake fluid (because to remove the strut you have to unscrew the brake line which runs through a bracket in the strut. you will probably drip some fluid)

its pretty straightforward to change them:

1) jack the car up and set it on jackstands

2) remove the wheels

3) pull the side covers off of the rear seats (if you put the rear seats down its the foam part which stays up

4) unscrew the brake line which goes through the bracket in the strut and tape it up so it doesn't drip too much

5) using a crescent wrench, take the 3 nuts off the top of the strut (they are located behind the covers you removed in step 3

6) using the impact wrench, remove the two bolts holding the bottom of the strut to the rest of the suspension parts

7) pull the strut out

8) put the new one in!

if you need to change the spring just follow the instructions that come with the compressors. be very careful changing the spring because if it shoots off it could seriously injure you.

plan on taking about 2 hours doing all 4 struts without changing springs. it took me 5 to change the struts and springs

have fun!

How much to replace front end struts on a 1991 Toyota Previa?

Depends who does it. It could take upto 3 hours of labour and struts start around £65 for gas replacements. Oil filled struts are better but dearer.

Does a 1991 toyota corolla have cv joints or do you have to change the whole axle?

It does have CV joints but, it is best to just swap out the complete axle assembly than to replace only the CV joint. You will spend much time and almost as much money trying to replace the CV joint than to just purchase a reconditioned axle assembly and swap it.
