How do you replace the fuel filter on a 1997 Mercedes C 280? |

Answer
First, jack up the car so you can get under it. Look at the location of the fuel filter. There is a plastic cover that is held on by 3 nuts requiring a 10 mm socket. These can be reached through access holes in the cover. Take off the cover. The fuel pump has a wiring harness that runs up into the trunk. You need to pop open the trunk and remove the plastic cover towards the front of the trunk floor. There are 3 plastic screws holding this on. Find the wiring for the fuel pump and unplug it. Then go start the car to release the fuel pressure in the lines until it stalls out. Go back and plug in the wiring plug for the fuel pump. Disconnect the negative ground on the battery. Climb back underneath and with a phillips head screwdriver loosen the hose clamps on the fuel filter. Be sure to have a container to catch any gasoline still in the lines. There is also a bracket holding the fuel filter and pump to the car. Loosen this as well to remove the filter. Connect the new fuel filter to the hoses (be sure the filter is pointed in the right direction of flow) and tighten up the hose clamps. Tighten up the screw holding the fuel filter to the mounting bracket. Put the plastic cover back on and tighten up the 3 nuts with your 10 mm socket. Lower the car and reconnect the battery ground. Go start the car. It will take a few trys to get the new filter full of gas and running up to the engine. Once done check out all the dirt in your old fuel filter. The end!
