** Warning!** You alone are responsible for every and all results and consequences incurred when doing anything for yourself! Having said that, consider that replacing a halogen lamp (the technical term for what many call a "bulb" is "lamp") in a lighting fixture follows a general pattern. (The lighting fixture as a whole can be called a lamp, by the way. It often is. This might be confusing, but hang in there.) If you don't want to go to the trouble of unplugging the lighting fixture, don't bother trying to replace the lamp in it. (If you took it in to a shop to have it done, you'd have to unplug it. And the lighting technician who does the work at the shop won't plug it in while he is replacing the lamp. Don't think about unplugging the fixture before changing the lamp. Just do it.) Halogen lamps have some kind of tempered glass covers, and this will have to be removed so one can get one's hands on the lamp itself. Look and see what kind of fasteners (screws) hold the glass cover on and remove them. Some lighting fixtures have a more elaborate design that includes a bezel that supports the safety glass, and that will have to be removed. (If it's not completely obvious how to disassemble the thing to get the lamp out, quit while you're ahead.) Be careful at all times not to drop and break the glass. As stated, it's tempered. One can't just cut a piece of window glass to replace it. The safety features will have been compromised. One should then be able to remove the bulb by gasping it with the fingers and pulling it out. Be careful! Some lamps (the smaller ones) have straight pins in their bases. They "bayonet" into the socket; they just push in and pull out. Spring loaded contacts in the socket hold the lamp in place. Other lamps have a "twist-lock" feature and must be turned a bit to be released from the socket. Some even screw in like a conventional light bulb. Once one has removed the lamp, replace it with a new one of the same kind. Oh, and keep your paws off the glass! Halogen lamps are extremely hot when they are operating. The lamp must be completely free of fingerprints, dust and anything else when it is in place. And the glass cover should be as well. Any oils left as residue when handling the lamp will pyrolize when the lamp is energized, and the extra heat can seriously shorten the life of the lamp or can actually present a fire hazard! If one is unclear or uncomfortable with any considerations regarding the necessary steps in replacing the halogen lamp in a lighting fixture, one should not attempt it. There are a lot of shops or handymen (and handywomen) who can do it for a modest fee. What does peace of mind cost?

Unplug the lamp and remove the protective glass, making

sure not to lose any of the hardware!

Make sure that the old bulb is cool enough to remove.

Remove the old bulb and grasp the new bulb using a piece of cloth or

something to prevent your skin from touching the glass of the new bulb.

carefully insert the new bulb in the socket, insuring that the bulb is fully seated.

After the protective glass and hardware has been replaced, turn on the lamp to ensure that it is working properly. Properly dispose of the old bulb.
