How do you replace the headlight bulb located on a 2001 Nissan Altima?

Answer:

Answer

replace the bulb by unscrewing the threaded flange on the back side of the headlamp. pull out the wiring harness connected to the light, and change the bulb. These bulbs should not be touched because the natural oils from fingers can ruin them!

Answer

Mike, I tried your advice, and it just doesn't work. Nissan has redesigned the 2001 Altima, so it's impossible for the layman to access the flange without special tools. I've had to take my 2001 Altima to the dealership for both bulb replacements after trying unsuccessfully to reach the flange. How do you reach your hand behind the flange? It's impossible.

I have a 2002 that I'm having the same prob with. I had to go to the dealer and they charged me $70 to change a freaking lightbulb. The other one is on it's way out and I do't want to spent this kind of dough again.... Can I buy a special tool somewhere?

Answer: The best one so far...

Basically, you have to move the anti-freeze reservoir to get room to work.
1. Move the anti-freeze reservoir. Remove 10mm screw that holds the reservoir in place. To lift the reservoir push it to the right, then lift up. You don't have to drain the reservoir, just put it somewhere out of the way.
2. Disconnect the bulb. Push down on the black retaining clip and disconnect the bulb harness.
3. Now the fun stuff. To get to the white retaining ring you will have to push in on the rubber matting. Turn the white retaining ring a quarter of a turn and pull it out.
4. The light will now pop out and you are done.
