The oil filter is located in the engine compartment unlike most that are actually underneath somewhere. It is a very unique style of filter. Basically it is just a cartridge that snaps in. If you look underneath the cowl tube that goes from the filter box to the engine, underneath the cowl tube, on the engine will be a big black plug looking thing. There is like a big hex on top of it. That is the filter top. It is plastic so be careful taking it off and putting it back on. To prevent damage, I would not use the hex as a means to take it off. I think there is a special adapter you can buy for it with a 3/8" top. This way it goes over the cover and you can use a ratchet/breaker bar and an extension with the tool. Be careful not to torque it down too tight otherwise it's a pain to get back off. That is about all I can say. The rest is self-explanatory. If you still have problems, I recommend getting a Haynes or Chilton manual for the cavalier. It will tell everything from checking the air filter all the way to changing the engine. They are very helpful books and I think every do-it-yourselfer should have one for their specific vehicle. Good Luck!!!

Depends on the engine, there are two different syles. One is a exterior spin on stlye, that you turn counterclockwise to remove. The other style is a cartridge style that is concealed with a plug. You can find it roughly offcenter on the drivers side and towards the front. The plug has a 1 1/4" nut that you turn counter-clockwise to expose the filter.
