There are Pull Starter replacement ropes available at Home Depot, Lowes, Orchard Supply Hardware and Ace Hardware.

Most of the folks there can tell you how to replace the pull start rope.

You might even fond your local Home and Garden Shop that repairs equipment like that and give them a call or take the mower down to have it fixed. Its normally pretty reasonalble.

But if you are going to do this on your own then here we go.

You are going to need to remove the cover from the engine. there are normally 3 or 4 bolts that hold the cover in place.

After you remove the bolts, you are going to find a deivce inside the cover called a spooler. This is where the pull rope is retracted to when the pull rope is pulled to start the engine.

On some there are three tags that have to be bent out and down to remove the spooler, and on some they are attached by more bolts and a clutch assembly.

Behind the spooler there will be a clock spring under tension, so be careful, because it may want to re-wind the cord even further, unless it already did so when the pull rope broke.

Remove the rope and install the new one being sure to string the new cord through the hole in the cover where the old cord was. When you install the one end on the spooler, be sure to tie a knot in it to keep it from slipping out.

Now replace the spooler and clutch. You will now need to turn the spooler against the clock spring to build the rewind pressure needed to retract the rope after you pull it. Only allow the spooler to fill up about half way then lock the spooler in place with a screwdriver. This may require the effort of a helper as humans are only equipped with two hands! Ha Ha Ha!

Now you are going to need to cut off any excess cord and install the pull handle. Remove the screwdriver and the spooler should retract the cord and stop when the handle comes in contact with the collar on the cover.

Now replace the cover on the engine and fasten the bolts down tight.

This may take you pulling the cord back and forth a little to get the clutch to align correctly on the crankshaft stud.

I hope that helped you out. But if you feel this is beyond your skills, then I would suggest that you have a someone helping you out with this, or as I mentioned you might take the piece of equipment to a Lawn and Garden Shop and see if they can replace it for you.
