There are several nuts on the inside of the luggage compartment (trunk/boot) which need to be removed. They are 10mm if I remember correctly. The taillamp then slides aft. This is a good time to clean the area under the lamp and wax it. Removal of the lamp is not necessary to replace bulbs/globes however. VWs normally use a plastic holder which snaps into place. This houses the bulbs and is easy to access.
