How do you replace the water pump on a 1986 Chrysler Fifth Avenue?

Answer:

Answer

Remove the hoses and discard the bypass hose. It will need to be replaced as the old ones most always close up and it's a $3.00 part anyway. I removed the four bolts that mount the fan and remove the fan. I'm not sure if you have to remove the shroud or not but it's only 4 bolts and I did remove mine to make it easier. Once all this is out of the way, remove the seven bolts attaching the water pump to the block keeping track of exact placement for reinstalling correctly. They are of different sizes to accommodate the different brackets that hold the smog pump, power steering pump, alternator etc. I used Indian head gasket shellac on the new gasket to keep it in place. I'm not sure that is reccomended but it worked for me. I screwed my water pump up by adding kerosene to the radiator thinking it was Prestone anti-freeze. It was the first part I had to buy for this car other than normal plugs, filters, etc. It spew kerosene out the overflow and got in everything. Clean motor but had to replace alternator and since the starter. 350,000 miles and still going.
