Answer
Water pumps are a PIA. Go to the website www.germanautoparts.com or www.pap-parts.com. http://www.pap-parts.com/products.asp?dept=3675 They have great prices for the water pumps. You will want to buy a Bentley Service Manuel for your A2 golf, they are not that expensive, probably about 50 bucks. I have one and it is far better than any other manuel. It will answer all questions. Also, try the website www.vwvortex.com, look in the golf II and jetta II forums. Some of the guys there can be a real pain, but most will answer any other questions that you might have too.
Basically what you are going to do is remove your riders side wheel and splash guard, drain the coolant and remove the belts. You might have to remove the front motor mount and take out the horizontal bolt in the rear engine mount. You might have to do this to drop the engine down. You will know once you get everything off. Remove the nut and T-bolt that fastens the camshaft drive telt cover to the water pump.. Disconnect the remaining hoses from the pump housing. Next, remove pump and housing assembly. Four bolts hold the colant assembly to the engine. Disassemble the pump and housing assembly. Remove the pulley/s from the coolant pump shaft. Remove the seven bolts and washers and separate the pump from the housing. Make sure you have new gaskets also.
Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Tighten the seven bolts evently until all are torqued to 10Nm (87in.lb.). Install the pulley/s and torque the bolts to 20Nm (15ft lb.).
You might not have to drop the engine down. It looks like it is tough but it is really not. Any questions email me. I can scan parts of my Bently for you if you need me to.
