Should be located in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from the radiator
Remove this housing
Note how thermostat is installed
Clean both surfaces
Replace thermostat and gasket
Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an airlock
Start engine and look for leaks
Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater on
Re-check coolant level
In my 1999 Nissan Altima the thermostat is located on the lower hose under a housing as described above. this is very unusual place but that is were mine is located.

The 1995 Nissan: temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor will be near the thermostat housing.
Try the fuse and then the bulbs.

I have only water on my Nissa Altima and the water does not evaporate. It would be a good idea to replace the thermostat. I was having problems with my car overheathing and replcing the thermostat fixed the problem.
