In your VW manual you should have received a booklet that pertains to the radio. Written on the inside front cover of that booklet is a 4 digit number. If you do not have this booklet you will need to call VW to get the code (I don't know if there is a cost associated with this or not.) When you turn your radio on (usually after interupting power to the vehicle) you will get a "safe" message on the radio face plate. After 3 seconds you will get 4 numbers. Enter the assigned 4 digit number by using the preset radio buttons 1-4. Once you get the number in, push the ">" portion of the "scan" button until you get an audible "beep." Your radio should be back in business.
The easiest way to reset your 2002 VW Beetle radio is to remove the radio fuse. Keep the radio fuse out for 10 seconds and replace it to its original slot.

There is nothing to "reset" for the 1999 VW Beetle.

To reset the ECM on a 2004 VW Beetle an diagnostic tool should be used. Plugging the unit directly to the diagnostic tool will allow a user to directly reset the computer.
minumum like the volume is turnd as low as it will go
Resetting the computer is easy. Just disconnect the battery. Reprogramming the computer afterwards is the expensive thing. To the best of my knowledge the only way to reprogram your computer is to take it to a VW Authorized Dealer. Normally the vehicle will run if you reset the computer, but emissions, alarm setting, radio can be negatively effected by not reprogrammed.
