How do you resurface a gunite pool?

You chip it & resurface it with "Marcite" & or "Dimondbrite" this is what contractors use on large commical pools to resurface them.

Answer

PLEASE don't try this yourself but DO lots of research and get word-of-mouth recommendations from other pool owners in your area! It's A LOT of work and heartbreak if not done right! Good luck!

Answer

This is what they did to our concrete inground: 1. Empty it, including frogs 2. Sandblast entire thing 3. patch with some white stuff in bags. I thought it was gunite. It may have been Diamondbrite. I am still searching for what it actually was, so I can repair it now (5 years later). Careful when putting on 6inches thick at a time on top edge, it may sag. 4. Paint it with pool paint. The stuff was rediculously expensive- about $60/gallon. Uses xylene as a thinner. Note- you will want to THIN IT for first application. We used a roller, and it went fast. It is going onto rough concrete, and you want it to soak in. 5. Put a second coat on it, not thinned. 6. Fill and enjoy.

Answer

The Gunite part of a swimming pool is the shell of concrete which is 8" to 12" inches thick. A top coat of plaster, pebbletek, tile, diamond brite or some other type of plaster is applied to the surface of the gunite to make the final finish. This top coat is removed usually with a jack hammer like tool. Then the pool can be resurfaced with a new type of material. This work should be done by a licensed swimming contractor who specializes in pool replastering. This is because if the job is not done right the swimming pool will leak. Look in the yellow pages under "s" for swimming pool plastering.

Answer

New gunite pools are finished with plaster (recommended) which is the best solution for new pools. Plaster, known as "marcite", should last about 15 years before deterioration begins. If you then replaster with marcite, the deterioration will happen much sooner; within three to four years.

Therefore, resurfacing is best achieved with long lasting fiberglass, encased in vinyl ester resin, and finished with gelcoat. This is a do-it-yourself application that can be completed in less than 20 hours by two people with no experience. This is based on a 16'x32' diving pool. Larger pools take longer unless a third person is added to the process.

"How to" instructions are clearly described in the book "Pool Resurfacing Made Easy".
