How do you route a serpentine belt on a vehicle to bypass the air conditioner compressor? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Go to an auto parts store and ask for a belt for your vehicle, only without A/C. You cannot use the belt that normally fits this vehicle.
Sometimes this works but many times it does not work. For example, I had to bypass the a/c compressor on a 96 ford taurus with a 3.0 liter engine. For starters, you can't go to your parts store and ask for a belt for a taurus that doesnt have a/c because there are not any made without a/c to begin with. There are "aftermarket" belt tensioners made for many vehicles that will reroute the belt past the a/c. You simply replace the original belt tensioner with the aftermarket tensioner that is redesigned to get the belt off of the a/c pully. In the case of my 96 Taurus, I was able to bypass my a/c compressor with a $35 tensioner and no "rigging" was involved. These parts are available online and in many cases a good autoparts store can order it for you.

Sometimes this won't work due to differences in pulley designs on non-A/C models.
