How do you safely cut a dog's ear hairs?

In all honesty, I would take the dog to a professional dog cutters place. They'll know how to do it safely. But if you really want to do it yourself, have someone hold the dog down for you and take a shaver of some nature and carefully and stedily shave the ear hairs.
