How do you separate a mixture of common salt and sand and iron filings?

Answer:
Apparatus:
  • -filter paper
  • -2 beakers
  • -funnel
  • -dish to hold the mixture
  • -Bunsen burner
  • -evaporating dish
  • -magnet

Method:
  • 1) Take the mixture and pour it into a beaker of water. Stir it around. The salt will dissolve , while the iron filings will not.
  • 2) fold a fluted piece of filter paper and put it into the funnel. Then filter it into another beaker. The salt solution will pass through and the iron filings and sand will remain on the paper because they are too big to fit through. They willl just remain on the paper.
  • 3) Put the salt and water into an evaporating dish and heat it over a Bunsen burner so that the water will evaporate. Eventually, you will onlly have the salt left.
  • 4) pass the magnet over the sand and iron filings. The magnet will attract the iron but not the silica of the sand.
  • Now, its separate.
