if you are refering to the cam timing after installing a new cam, bring #1 piston first piston on drivers side to the top on compression stroke. To check this use a gauge or just insert your finger in spark plug hole(not all the way in just plug) have some one turn the engine over slow, when the compression blows exhaust out that is close to top dead center, next remove valve cover on driver side and check to be sure both rocker arme are on top valves will be closed. If all is well install the timing chain. cam gear will have a dot and the crank gear will have a dot align the dots so that the cam dot is at bottom and the crank dot is on the top.

What do the timing gear marks mean on a Chevy 250 engine?

the mark on the camshaft timing gear needs to line up with the mark on the crankshaft timing gear to ensure the camshaft is in proper time with the crankshaft. Keep in mind that the marks will only line-up every other revolution of the engine due to the crankshaft spinning twice as fast as the camshaft.
