To set a liner you have to install a small μμF rated capacitor, thick guage springs, and a light armature bar.
To set a shader you have to install a large μμF rated capacitor, thin guage springs, and a heavy armature bar.
The smaller the capacitor rating the faster the discharge from the cap, hence a faster cycles per second (cps). The tighter (thicker) the spring the less give it has and returns to it's starting position hence a faster cps. The lighter the armature bar the less effort on the spring to pull it back up increasing the cps. The inverse is also true for a shader set up.
The gap between the contact screw and the spring is an old "fix all" solution that is outdated. The gap can be as wide open or closed as you want it as long as the tune is set. With the advancements in capacitor technology and the ability to cut springs of different guages it has changed the way you set a machine. This worked when all you had was one guage for springs and used whatever cap (if any) you could find. If it works for you wide open to line or shade it's how you work and that should be enough.

Unfortunately going through an apprenticeship doesn't make you a good tattooist, you still need talent, though if you want to be accepted as a legitimate tattooist then it's the right avenue, and gives you knowledge so you wont have to ask stupid questions like this.

A tattoo machine's speed is so very widely variable that an estimate would do no good. You could use a weak coil machine with a lot of spring tension on a low power source and it will go really slow. But say you use a double contact liner at high power and it goes fast. Even a single machine can be a slow shader or a fast liner. You'll never find a straight up answer, sorry.

Of course, everyone does it different, but this is just for beginning.-This may be the answer you were looking for but to take the question literally I believe you are asking for the actual gauge of the spring stock. Simply put it is mostly up to your personal tastes as a Tattoo Artist but the general rule of thumb is the thicker the spring the faster it will go, so for example you may use .013 - .018 for a shader and .017- .022 for a liner, you may also change the gauges between the main (back) and timing (front spring) but generally only within .002 eg. .018 main .020 timing.

This is totally dependent on the size of the piece that you are doing, the bigger the piece, the bigger the needle set. Typically, I like to fill tribal with a round shader as opposed to a mag. In my opinion you get a tighter grouping without having to really work at it, and for the most part, I hit the edges usually with a 15RS, and then will switch over to a 25RS for the middle fill. Most artists, including myself, will have a machine set up solely for tribal. Having a machine set up for a nice long stroke will give you the optimal results for tribal rather than trying to do it with a typical machine set up for general shade.
