Yes. That car has an "autostick" transmission. It's a three-speed manual gearbox coupled to an "automatic clutch." Basically, there's a very sensitive switch (a "microswitch") under the shifter. When you put your hand on the shifter, it closes the switch and works the clutch. After you shift and let go of the handle, it lets the clutch out and you can drive. Not only do you shift the car, you have to remember not to let your hand rest on the shift knob...you'll slow down in a hurry and you won' t know why.

No. For a start, the Skyline GTR comes with a manual gearbox - 5 speed in the case of the R32 and R33, and 6 speed in the R34. The reason the answer is no is that with a manual gearbox the engine (essentially the crankshaft) is connected to the gearbox via the clutch, where the clutch is (for the sake of argument) two plates that rub together becoming fully locked when the pedal is all the way out and not touching each other/totally separated when the pedal is all the way in. With an automatic gearbox - that is, a true automatic gearbox - the engine is connected to the gearbox by a torque converter INSTEAD OF a clutch. The torque converter is basically a vat of viscous fluid connected to the gearbox with a fan/propeller like implements inside it - engine spins and transfers rotational motion to the gearbox by the propeller spinning in the fluid. (this explanation has been somewhat simplified here). Now, where things get a bit weird is where manufacturers start talking about "semi auto/tiptronic" boxes or "sequential manual" boxes. Without going into two much detail, there are broadly two types. Semi autos are often just automatic gearboxes with a manual override (still a torque converter but you can put the box into manual mode where you select the gear). These are generally very smooth like true auto boxes. Sequential manuals are a manual gearbox with two solenoids to control shifting and one to control clutch (they are a real manual gearbox, so do have a clutch). Many of these have an automatic mode, but are not as smooth as auto boxes when in that auto mode. Neither of these types of boxes generally have a "clutch pedal" - the auto box based one doesn't have a clutch and with the manual box based one, the gearbox automatically disengages the clutch when you come to a stop to prevent stalling. The Skyline has neither of these (only a true manual gearbox with a stick and a clutch pedal). Hope that helps.

If it is an eight speed in a truck, chances are it is a big rig of some sort. Push the clutch in and put the shifter in first gear. Slowly let off the clutch until the truck starts to move. Speed up until it feels like you need to shift again. You can slip the shifter out of first and into second without using the clutch if you are quick and get the feel of the engine RPMs. If you want to use the clutch you will need to double clutch. Push the clutch in to shift from first to neutral. Now let the clutch out so the engine and transmission gears start turning at the same speed. Now, quickly clutch again and shift into the next gear. let off the clutch and accelerate again. If you have a four speed with a two speed rear end there will be a switch on the shifter. Shift through the first four gears normally, then flip the switch an go back to 1st, which will become 5th gear with the axle in high range. To down shift you should double clutch too. First, clutch to shift into neutral. Let off the clutch and rev up the engine so the RPMs are correct for the vehicle speed and the next gear you want to shift into. Now clutch again and downshift. When you let off the clutch the engine, which can only turn so fast, will pull the truck speed down. You can give the engine some throttle and slowly back off so the engine braking isn't so rough or sudden. Good Luck!

Gearboxes on trucks are generally not synchromesh. It means there is no mechanism to automatically adjust the speed of the engine and the gearbox to match. Therefore if we would simply change gears like in the modern passenger car equipped with the synchromesh gearbox by depressing the clutch and shifting the gear up or down before releasing the clutch the different speeds of the engine and the gearbox would cause the grinding. To avoid this change requires process called double clutch. It goes like this: 1. Depress the clutch, 2. Shift the gear into neutral, 3. Release the clutch, 4. If shifting down depress the accelerator to rev up the engine so the rpm's of the engine are slightly higher than the gearbox and release it; if shifting down depressing the accelerator may not be necessary if the whole process is done quickly enough, 5. Depress the clutch again - that's why it is called double clutch, 6. Shift the gearbox into next gear (up or down). At this stage the rpm's of the engine will be slightly higher than the gearbox and the engine will be slowing down at some point the speed of the engine and the gearbox will match and the gear will go in without grinding. This needs to be done with the feel and with the bit of practice it becomes automatic. The amount the engine needs to be speeded up will depend on the conditions for example if changing gears when going up the hill.
