For the boy dogs they cut open the balls and cut an opening in the scrotal sac and remove the testicles.
Dogs (and cats) should be brought to a veterinarian, who will be able to professionally complete the procedure.
A veterinarian neuters a dog through a castration surgery. The dog is placed under general anesthesia and the abdomen in front of the scrotum is prepped for surgery - shaved, cleaned and sanitized. The testicles are manually advanced out of the scrotum and a single incision is made in the abdomen through which the testicle is "popped out" of. The blood vessels to the testicle are ligated (tied shut with suture) and the testicle is cut off. The same process is repeated for the other testicle, then the abdomen is carefully sutured back together.

Once the skin is sutured closed, the dog is removed from general anesthesia and typically given some long-acting pain medication either IV or into the muscle. A vet tech or the veterinarian will observe the dog as he recovers from general anesthesia and wakes up, both to ensure there are no problems and to make sure the residual pain is being adequately addressed.

You can generally expect to get several day's worth of oral pain medications for your dog, as well as instructions to keep your dog's activity level down for the next couple of weeks while the incision heals. In 10-14 days, the vet will have you come back for a suture removal visit - the vet will pull the sutures out and make sure the area has healed appropriately.

This is basically what happens. You have heard of a human getting a surgery so they don't have babies. This is like the same thing. They do almost exactly what they do to humans only its a dog so there are probably a couple different ways. My advice: If you want to get your dog spayed because you don't want puppies, ask your vet.

Actually, they do it differently than in humans, since in humans, they only disable or remove the Fallopian tubes. In dogs and cats, they remove everything. They remove the ovaries, uterus, and Fallopian tubes. That not only prevents pregnancy, but it also eliminates going into "heat."

A vasectomy in humans is when they clip the sperm ducts, usually suturing one end and leaving the other open. Neutering a dog or cat is simply castration, where they actually remove the testes.
Spaying is the removal of the reproductive tract of a female dog (or cat) to prevent hormonal fluctuations and pregnancy. This is an open abdominal surgery in which the ovaries and uterus are removed completely - the medical term for the procedure is ovariohysterectomy. After spaying, the dog will no longer go through heat cycles and will not be able to have puppies.

Spay is for the females so in this case your vet will give the dog anesthetic to put her to sleep, the vet will then shave the tummy of the dog and make an incision about 2-3 inches in length. He/she then goes in and removes the ovaries, after that there are 2 ways closing the incision can be done. It can either be with stitches that have to be removed in 6-8 weeks or with disolvable staples that do not have to be removed

Once spayed, a dog can't be turned un-spayed. Spaying means removing the ovaries and the uterus. These parts are gone and can't be replaced or repaired.
