How to Start an Errand Business

Errand services have quickly become one of the most popular home-based businesses in the country. With so many Americans starved for time these days, few have time to take care of all their errands and other personal task that are piling up.

As with most home-based businesses, an errand service can be appealing because it offers flexibility in your schedule and escape from the daily corporate rat race. However, if you are serious about starting an errand or personal concierge service you must be committed to making an investment in your time and your money. Below are three basic steps when starting an errand business:

1. Marketing
As with many other businesses you will have to invest in marketing. For an errand service, networking will be a powerful tool to help build your client list. However, before you begin networking you will need to have professional business cards made to pass out at mixers and other functions. In addition, you will want to have a website so that people can find out more about your services and pricing and a corporate email account.

Take advantage of all social events as networking opportunities as well. Whether you are at a church function, friend's party, wedding, etc ., those are all opportunities for you to make connections. Your goal is to get your name out to everyone that you meet. Although the person that you meet may not be in need of your services that day, chances are they know at least 200 other people and one of those people will need your services at one point!

2. Insurance and Bonds
To help protect your business and yourself, you will want to be insured and bonded before beginning any services. The average insurance policy is about $500 per year and the average bond is about $100 year, all depending on the state you reside in. Call you agent for more details.

3. Pricing
Decide how you are going to charge for your services. Some choose a flat hourly rate while others charge per task. Prior to making a final decision, research your competition. You will want to be aware of what other similar services in your area are charging. Don't be discouraged if you notice several other errand businesses or businesses that are charging lower rates than what you want. Just focus on how you will make your business different and better.
