Here are some suggestions:

  • Try flossing first, there may be something lodged between the teeth causing pressure. However make sure you are careful and gentle because your gums could be inflamed.
  • Take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Asprin should be avoided as it can cause a burning sensation if your gums are raw or inflamed.
  • Purchase and apply an over-the-counter oral antiseptic containing benzocaine.
  • Purchase oil of cloves and apply to the affected area. Oil of cloves may increase the pain slightly for the first few seconds before the painkilling effect steps in.
  • Apply an ice pack to the outside area of your mouth, against your cheek or jaw. The coldness will numb the the nerves in the tooth that are sending the pain signals to the brain. However this may not work if you have sensitive teeth.

When you can, you should see a dentist for proper pain relief. Particularly if the pain is severe.

Scientific fact:

Did you know - that if you pinch your arm or leg, the pain you have elsewhere will vanish for a few seconds?

This is because your brain can only concentrate on one source of pain at a time!

Aching Gums can be due to infection and a doctor should be consulted. Try this for an immediate relief - Take a piece of sterilized cotton and put a drop of clove oil which you could get over the counter especially from a pharmacy, and press down to the painful area. It burns a bit but does no other harm to your gums or tooth. It has been proved to have anaesthetic properties. Take care it does not touch the tongue as it has a taste not liked by all. Many people also take a pain reliever like or even paracetamol but better to meet the doctor first.
