To stop certain or all notifications, you can go to your "Settings" app (a pre-installed app from Apple that looks like a gear and allows you to change device settings). Once in the settings app, you can scroll down until you see an item that reads: Notifications. If you have iOS 5.0 or up you can change alert settings. To find out, go to Settings then tap General, then select About. If you do have iOS 5 then continue, if not, refer to the bottom of this answer. Now scroll down until you see your Text Messaging App listed in the notification center. Tap the texting app. You will now be presented with multiple options about how it is displayed, how often, how many, and whether or not to display them at all. To completely turn off texting notifications for this app, slide the switch that currently says: ON to OFF.
If you do not have iOS 5, you can easily upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 by plugging it into your computer, then connecting to iTunes. Once in iTunes select you iPhone under the Devices section. In the middle of the screen, you will see a button labeled: Check for Updates or Upgrade Spftware. Click that button, and then follow the onscreen instructions. See related link
