There isn't much you can do to end a round of colic once it starts. Colic is a generic term meaing abdominal pain and can be caused by anything from excessive gas to the intestines tying themselves in knots and cutting off the blood supply. If your animal appears to have severe colic, the best recommendation is to call your veterinarian for advice as he/she can determine what kind of colic it is and how to treat it.

There are some steps you can take to help prevent colic from starting, particularly in horses. These include removing horses from pastures or padlocks with sandy turf, providing a consistent diet with adequate roughage and monitoring your horse for normal bowel movements.

While there are a number of studies surrounding what is refered to as colic, the causes, and how to treat, there is no one specific cause, nor even a treatment that will work on all babies that suffer from colic. Often holding the baby upright and doing plenty of walking can help, but this varies from baby to baby

Colic is the number one killer of horses. Colic can be caused by many different things but the most common cause is parasites. Prevention is much prefered to treatment. All horses must be on a deworming program all year long. Over-eating may also cause colic so keep feedroom doors locked at all times. Other causes are sand from eating off the ground, a twisted gut, ulcers, stones, and impactions.

You can't prevent all colic such as colic caused by the horse 'twisting a gut'. But you can prevent worms and sand consumption. Your best defense is to know your horse, his habits. The onset of colic can be rapid so be aware of your horse's behavior and habits. Watch for small hints that he may not be feeling well. Know when your horse usually takes his naps. If he is laying down too much he may be ill. Or if his is not as enthusiastic about his food. Just like a mother may notice her child is not quite right, watch for subtle cues he may be giving you.
