Try and talk about their interests and what they like doing, if they have low self esteem and this is causing them to be quiet then this will signify to them that obviously they're not bad because someone is interested in their life. It will be hard at first but people who don't like talking may open up once they fully feel comfortable with the other person. Sorry this answer is horrible, I am one of these people who don't like to talk so I'm trying to answer from my own point of view.

Don't beg. Just remind him you can pick your friends , but not your family. Ask him if you can agree on mutual civility for the sake of family harmony. Maybe someday things will change.
