My pediatrician said that flea bites tend to be spread farther apart than bed bug bites. Fleas jump around and bite sporadically. Bed bugs crawl on you and will bite several times in a row, so you could see three or more bites in a row right next to each other; fleas won't do that. Both types itch.

Both usually bite you when it is dark at night and indeed it may often be difficult to distinguish one from the other if you see little red bite marks on somebody's body the following day as with many people, they look very alike. But while mosquito bites all look alike on skins of different people bitten , bedbug bites do vary substantially in appearance as everybody is different in how they react to the coagulant and anaesthetic the bedbug injects into them before starting its meal.

Some people can have no apparent sign on them they have been bitten by bedbugs when they were asleep in their bed, while others get very nasty looking raised red spots or lumps all over their limbs or back or face, which with some people appear soon after being bitten but with some people do not appear for several days or even a week or more after being bitten. Others get little red marks which look much the same as if they had been bitten by mosquitoes, though with bedbug bites it is very usual to see three little bite marks in a neat line very close together, whereas with mosquito bites they will usually be singly around different parts of the victim's skin.

Adult bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown, oval-shaped, flattened, and about 3/16 to 1/5 inch long. Their flat shape enables them to readily hide in cracks and crevices. The body becomes more elongate, swollen, and dark red after a blood meal. Also after feeding, they become more cigar-shape which makes them look like a different insect. The adults have small, stubby, non-functional wing pads. Newly hatched nymphs are nearly colorless, becoming brownish as they mature. Young bed bugs have the general appearance of adults. Eggs are white and about 1/32 inch long.

Fleabites are not painful and fleas usually only bite once, bed bugs may cause rows of bitewounds. This is due to the fact that altough the bug bites you when you are asleep, you still feel the bite. Therefore the bug is disturbed regulary to is has to bite multiple times.

It is difficult to determine with certainty whether a bug bite is from a bed bug without having it examined by a professional. In general, bed bug bites appear as an itchy rash or legion on exposed areas of skin.

Almost impossible because they have similar mouthparts, similar size and can both cause a bump. location might be a clue. Fleas rarely bite above the knees since they can't go as high.
