Generally in the Model Number on the outside condenser unit there will be 2 numerals that together will be a multiple of 6; for example 24, 30, 48 etc. If you divide that number by 12 it will give you the tons for your ac. In this example if would be 2 tons, 2.5 tons, 4 tons respectively.

The figure of 12 for a 1-ton unit comes from the fact that it has a power of 12,000 BTU per hour in terms of the heat shifted.
