These are the countries where the Barbie doll has been manufactured. It can give you a general idea of an individual doll's age. 1959-1972 JAPAN 1968-1970, 1989-1990 MEXICO 1970-1987 Hong Kong 1970-1987 TAIWAN 1973-1978 KOREA 1978-1988 Philippines 1986 to present CHINA 1986 to present MALAYSIA 1992 to present Indonesia
Never, never, NEVER pay attention to the 1966 date on a Barbie doll's backside. That date refers to when the Twist N Turn waist was patented, not when she was sold. A better way to determine a doll's age is to look at the country of manufacture. They are: 1959-1972 JAPAN 1968-1970, 1989-1990 MEXICO 1970-1987 HONG KONG 1970-1987 TAIWAN 1973-1978 KOREA 1978-1988 PHILIPPINES 1986 to present CHINA 1986 to present MALAYSIA 1992 to present INDONESIA.
It doesn't.
Never, never, NEVER pay attention to the 1966 date on a Barbie doll's backside. What that date refers to is when the Twist N Turn waist was patented, and dolls with Twist N Turn waists were sold between 1967 and 1999. There are millions and millions of dolls out there with the 1966 date on their butts. The best way to gauge a doll's age is to look at the country of manufacture. The oldest dolls were made in Japan, and they were manufactured there between 1959 and 1972. Dolls from the 1970s were made in Taiwan, Mexico, Korea, Hong Kong or the Phillipines. Dolls from the 1980s were made in the Phillipines.
The easiest way is to find the country of manufacture, which will be written on the doll's backside. The earliest dolls, from 1959 to 1972, were made in Japan. They have been made in numerous Asian countries ever since.

The original vintage years for Barbie dolls were 1959 to 1972, but that has now been extended through 1979. The easiest way to identify dolls from those two decades is to look at the country of manufacture, when dolls were made in:

Japan

Taiwan

a few in the United States

a few in Mexico

Korea

Hong Kong

Beginning in 1978, dolls were made in the Philippines, and they continued to be made there until the mid-1980s.
