There are different things for each iPod. I have the fourth generation, so I have a camera on mine. My friend has the third generation but does not have a camera. The other iPods are also thicker.
Telling the difference between iPod Touch generations is fairly simple.
Telling the difference between 1st generation iPod Touches from 2nd & 3rd generations is simple. The 1st generation iPod Touch has a flat chrome back, whereas the 2nd & 3rd generations have rounded chrome backs.
To tell the difference between 2nd & 3rd generation iPod Touches, you will have to look at the model number engraved on the back of the device. If you look at the engraved writting at the bottom you will see a model number which either says A1288 or A1318.
If you see "A1318" then it is a 2nd generation iPod Touch. If you see "A1288" then it is a 3rd generation iPod Touch.

However, distinguishing the difference between a 2nd & 3rd generation iPod Touch is slightly more tricky. If you look on the back of the iPod Touch, at the engravings at the bottom of the device you will need to look for a model number.

You can tell by the shape, size, buttons, etc, but NOT by screen, since the shuffle has never had one, and won't ever.
The 1st generation looks like a long stick shape, with buttons -
Sound Up
Back Play/Pause Forward
Sound Down.
The 2nd generation looks the same as the 1st gen, except shorter and held/sat down horizontally. It also has the same buttons.
The 3rd gen is altogether new. It has no buttons - every song is controlled by the headphones. It is about two-thirds of the 2nd gen Shuffle.
The 4th gen is the newest, but not newest, if you know what I mean. It's like a square version of the 2nd gen iPod Shuffle, as all the buttons fit into it.
Pictures below.

The 1st and 2nd iPod have no camara. The 3rd iPod has a camara in the front but not in the back. The 4th has a camara in the front and back.
