If they are slow talking and choose their words very carefully, that is because the guy is probably holding a gun to their head. Also if they start to cough or gasp if they something a little strange. The guy might have strangled them for giving you a hint. One easy way to know if they're in need of your help is if they say something you for a fact would know is false. Like, "You'll have to remind your brother Josh that we need to see the movies together," when you don't have a brother named Josh.
