If you are young and have teeth over lapping or some are too big the dentist may pull a couple of teeth and then put braces on the patient's teeth.

Teeth have a tendancy to shift back to their original position and wearing a retainer at night will help keep your teeth in alignment. If you haven't had braces and are slightly overcrowded on the top or bottom a retainer is sometimes used to gently allow the teeth to space apart. If you think you may need a retainer, check with your your orthodontist. If you don't have an orthodontist get a referral from your dentist. Many orthodontists will do a consult for free.

Braces are VERY expensive, and I tell you, they are NOT fun to have! You cant eat sugar for 6 weeks or else you teeth will rot where they glued the square on.
