The easiest way is the oil pan the 4l60e has 16 bolts and the 4l80e has 17 bolts
on the right side of the transmission above the pan is an electrical connector on the 4L60E and on the 700R4 there is a cable. this cable is the downshift cable which controls shift points which are electronic on the 4L60E
Call your local GM dealer with the seventeen digit vin number and they will be able to tell you. NEW ANSWER: Yours has a 4L60E in it. The 1/2 tons used the 4L60E and the 3/4 tons and up used the 4L80E. They quit using the 700R4 around 1991 ( I think ) The 4L60E and the 4L80E will not interchange due to the wiring harness and ECM / computer.
If it's a 1/2 ton it will have a 4L60E automatic transmission from the factory. 3/4 Tons had a 4L80E in them.
There's ONLY 2 that will work. If it is a 1/2 ton then it will be the 4L60E transmission. the 3/4 tons and heavier used the 4L80E in them.
4l60e deep or shallow pan, or 4l80e, (depending on the bolt pattern on bottom of tranny, auto zone can tell u the bolt patterns to what tranny)
The ONLY transmission that will work in that year is the 4L60E. Due to the computor system and transmission wiring harness. All the 1/2 ton trucks used the 4L60E transmission and the 3/4 tons used the 4L80E transmissions in them.
These are the 2 transmissions used that year by chevy. 1/2 Ton trucks have the 4L60E transmissions in them ONLY. The 3/4 tons used the 4L80E trans. in them.

GRAB YOUR VIN NUMBER AND GO TO A DEALER. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHICH TRANNY YOU HAVE. The better info would be: If it has a square shaped transmission pan and has 16 bolts around it, then it is a 4L60e. If it is more of a rectangular shaped pan and has 17 bolts, then it is a 4L80e.
