You can tell a female from a male by its dorsal, and fins. The male is larger, alot more colorful and has long fins, the female on the other hand, has shorter fins, are smaller, and not as colorful.Remember, both male and female ARE fighting fish, so they will have the same temper. Never put a male and female together unless breeding.

The Boy Betta Fish Are Colorful Bright And Have Long Wavy Tails.Girls Have less color And Dont Have Buetiful Tales. By:Expert Serena
Adult female bettas are smaller than adult male bettas, have shorter fins, and are often more dull/drab in color than males. However, the true distinguishing feature of female bettas vs. male bettas is that females have a small white bump on their stomachs-- this is the ovipositor, from which the eggs are released during mating. Males do not lay eggs, and thus do not have an ovipositor.

The males are the long tailed ones. the tail is about 4 times the length of a female. They are often found in the pet store in a bowl while the females are often all together in one tank (Females Like to live together males normally don't)

Females bodies are a bit wider and they also have an egg spot. It looks like a single grain of salt on the bottom of the fishes belly.

Males blow bubble nests! So if you see bubbles collecting in your tank at the top you have a male!

Males flare often at other males or sometimes females.

Males can live with other males but you need at least a gallon per fish and the females well they don't seem to do well alone at all.

I have 3 females and one male in a different tank.

In short the Girly looking lovely flowing ones are actually male!

Both male and female come in tons of colors and types!
Girl betta fish have very short fins and are smaller than the males. Some males do have short fins, but only certain types. Google search female betta fish to compare your fish with pictures of other female fish.

Male Betta's are very aggressive, and they have long tails, and the anal fin is longer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Females are not as beautiful as the male Betta's, they are very petite, and have very short fins. And it is almost like they don't have an anal fin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you put to of the same, or opposite sex Betta's together, they will fight till one is dead. Males grow fighting fins when they see other fish, they get thick fins that are usually hidden under the mouth, and you can see blood inside.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, female Betta's do not have hidden fighting fins. When a female is put with a male the male fights the female for a spell of time, and then they mate.
