How do you tell the difference between cotton and poly cotton fabric?

I am a quilter and I will only use 100% cotton in my cotton quilts. I can usually tell when I iron the fabric if it is cotton or polycotton. Cotton has virtually no smell when ironed or at least a very natural smell. Polycotton has a very strong chemical smell.
